Project 3 - Patterns,Inspiration

Interesting use of target and checkered effect.

3d illusion created with different size rectangles/diamonds

Another interesting pattern created with straight and curved lines

Using layers of random re-occurring pattern, creating depth.

Layering of squares, building up more so in certain areas.

I like the use of faces joied at an angle while still having a symetrical pattern

After finding these precedents, I am interested in exploring the aspect of repitition in a pattern and the way a simple shape can become something more complex.

Final Photo

Final photo of model, tried to show the shadows along with the light reflecting off the pieces.

Few shots to show model

My Final Render

Creating the render

These are some renders of my final design

Creating the frame

Creating the frame was harder than I thought it would first be. I was planing on making most of the frame out of single piece of wire, but I couldn't find any wire that was long enough. I then tried bending the wires around each other so that they would stay together, but I couldn't bend the wire enough for this to work. I then thought of using fishing line to bind the wires together. This worked ok but wasn't ideal because it was quite flimsy.

At this time I also tested out using the fishing line to hang my pieces of acrylic, but it turned out that the acrylic was too light and the fishing line curved. I realized I would have to use string, so chose a simple white string. I then also tried binding the wire with the white string, which held together better than the fishing line but was still quite flimsy. But because I thought the way the string on the frame and the string holding the pieces of acrylic matched looked good, I chose to stick with this.

Digital Models - developing the shape

The four below images show how I explored different possibilities in the arrangement of a hanging rectangle shape

I then also looked at different sized pieces.

And also then played around with what I could create with these.

I liked where I was going with my design, but I thought it may be too cluttered and should be simpler. So I simplified this design and created the one below.

I chose to create the above design as it was simple but also very interesting.

Digital models - looking at frame

These are some of the digital models I created when trying to come up with what kind of shape I want to create and with what kind of size and shape pieces. Also what the frame would look like.

This was my first digital model, playing around with what I could create with the pieces. I was also going to originally make a cardboard frame but this didnt look good and would take away from the rest of the design.

Another view of my first digital model.

Trying out the look and shape of a wire frame, which I thought looked better and more simplistic.

My precedents

Sketches

These were some of my early concepts. I decided to base my design on the concept on the last page

Project 2 - inspiration

Some images that I found and that inspired me, when coming up with ideas. Some of my sketches are based on these.

I thought of making a kind of box, where most of it was made  of cardboard but some parts would also be acrylic, so that you could look inside it.

Simple use of hexagon to create a pattern.

I like how this design uses a lot of layers to create the overall shape. Also the idea of using a light to peer through the cracks of the design is very cool.

This image also uses layers, but instead uses one constant shape.

This image uses a lot of simple but ordered angles and faces in order to create a more complex image collectively. Also some areas of interest are highlighted.

I like how this building uses two contrasting materials effectively, similar to something I could create with acrylic and cardboard. The wood is used to create the basic, bold shapes of the building, while the other material adds detail inside the wooden shapes.

This form is created using shapes that slot together to create a larger composition. I like the use of right angled pieces that slot together.

Another object that uses simple shape an layers in an interesting way.

Contrasting materials and use of layers again.

I like the fact that the materials are hanging, would be cool if the hanging materials created an over all shape.
